The Krampus lauf!

Monday, November 28th

Saturday and Sunday, it was the first weekend where the Krampus were in Salzburg!
You are probably asking you what are the Krampus?

This is a Krampus!

In Austro-Bavarian Alpine folkloreKrampus is a horned, anthropomorphic figure described as "half-goat, half-demon",who during the Christmas season, punishes children who have misbehaved, in contrast with Saint Nicholas, who rewards the well-behaved with gifts.

In traditional parades and in such events as the Krampuslauf (in English: the Krampus run), young men dressed as Krampus participate; such events occur annually in most Alpine towns. Krampus is featured on holiday greeting cards called Krampuskarten.
Krampuslauf is a run of celebrants dressed as the wicked beast, often fueled by alcohol. The tradition resurrects a centuries-old ancient ritual meant to disperse winter's ghosts.

The origin of the figure is unclear; some folklorists and anthropologists have postulated a pre-Christian origin for the figure.
More physically, Krampus appears in many variations, most share some common physical characteristics. He is hairy, usually brown or black, and has the cloven hoovesand horns of a goat. His long, pointed tongue lolls out. He has fangs.
Krampus carries chains, thought to symbolize the binding of the Devil  by the Christian Church.
He thrashes the chains for dramatic effect. The chains are sometimes accompanied with bells of various
sizes.
Of more Pagan origins are the ruten, bundles of birch branches that Krampus carries and with
which he occasionally swats children.

The birch branches are replaced with a whip in some representations.
Krampus appears with a sack or a basket strapped to his back; this is to cart off evil children for drowning,
eating, or transport to Hell. Some of the older versions make mention of naughty children being put in the
bag and being taken.

You can find the Krampus:

-A toned-down version of Krampus is part of the popular Christmas markets in Austrian urban centres like in Salzburg. In these, more tourist-friendly interpretations, Krampus is more humorous than fearsome.
In Styria is a state or Bundesland, located in the southeast of Austria.
Similar figures are recorded in neighboring areas. Klaubauf Austria, while Bartl or Bartel, Niglobartl, and Wubartl are used in the southern part of the country.

-In most parts of Slovenia, whose culture was greatly affected by Austrian culture, Krampus is called parkelj and is one of the companions of Miklavž, the Slovenian form of St. Nicholas.

-In many parts of Croatia, Krampus is described as a devil wearing a cloth sack around his waist and chains around his neck, ankles, and wrists. As a part of a tradition, when a child receives a gift from St. Nicholas he is given a golden branch to represent his good deeds throughout the year; however, if the child has misbehaved, Krampus will take the gifts for himself and leave only a silver branch to represent the child's bad acts.

-The North American Krampus celebrations, though rare, are a growing phenomenon.

So, Sunday evening, we went to Hallein (suburb of Salzurg and next to Rif) to see the Krampuslauf.
We payed two Euros for going there (for the entire family) and we had a stamp on our hand. It was really funny (I was in the front just behind the barriers) so I saw all the Krampus (there were so many!) but at one moment, a Krampus swatted me with the branches on the legs: it hurt a lot!!
With the little children, the Krampus were very kind: they gave them candies and took pictures.

Despite that, it was a very cool evening because we also laughted a lot with all the family!

The Krampus inspired also movies like:

The Christmas Market arrived in Salzburg!

Saturday, November 26th

"It is the season for a romantic walk across the city's hilltops, affording a breathtaking view of the city. After descending back down to town, the merry bustle of the Salzburg Christmas market touches all. The smell of punch and toasted almonds, hot roasted chestnuts and freshly baked apples envelopes your nose, and the vendors' gingerbread hearts, nativity figures, Christmas tree ornaments, toys and snug knitwear are irresistible."

This weekend, the Christmas market began!
The Christmas Market is very famous in Salzburg, every year, people come from other countries to see it.
I'ts everywhere in the city, you can find a lot of things to buy (but unfortunately it's expensive!), little presents like Christmas decorations, slippers, pull-overs, beanies, candles, sculptures ...

You can also go there to eat something because there is a lot of stands which sell food (bretzels, candy, different kinds of chocolate, crêpes, sandwiches and a lot of Austrian specialties) or you can drink something like big beers or punch!

It's beautiful because there is a lot a lights and Christmas decorations, and a big Christmas tree.

There are a lot of people and there is a fabulous atmosphere!
We went there three times in a week because it's always like it's the first time that we go there! We bought things to eat (we were shocked because the price of one crêpe is 6 Euros !!!)

I think i will buy a lot of thinks from there for Christmas (for my host family and my family). We went there one time at around 18:00h and that was the most beautiful experience because the lights in the night are so pretty!!

The evening, we went in a bar with friends not far away as the Christmas Market!

Saturday, we went in an exhibition center (a place where there is a lot of exhibitions) for buy ski equipment and for looking the different schools (in rooms equipped with stands).
The students were presenting the different specialities of their schools and there was a lot of activities for trying different works.
We went in first in a place where the people can rent their ski equipment and you can buy ski equipment nearly news with very interesting prices. We stayed here one hour for looking for shoes, helmets, bonnets, gloves for me and the family. Meanwile, Stefan (Alina's father) was standing in line and waiting for rent their ski equipment.

When we were finish, we went with Alina looking a parade of clothes that different schools of modelling made, that was very cool to look!

After that,, we walk around all the stands (so a lot because there was 3 or 4 hangars) and we were looking all the schools and speaking about what can be the best or the more interesting for us.
We joined the family for eat (a good foccacia with tomatoes) and then, whe went an other time to look at the stands for Dario (Alina's brother). We separated in two groups because Larrissa (Alina's sister) and me were not very interesting in informatic.
So, we walk around and we did a lot of activities like making our own USB key, we drew with fire in the wood, we sewed a pocket for put candies into, we played golf (I was quite good so I might inherited this from my family!).
So that was a very good day because it's very interesting to try some works, and to learn think that you will maybe do in the futur!
I spent also a very good time with my host family!

Oh yeah also we ate Friday the pasta that we did at school Thursday in Italian and it was so good !!

Alina really likes it!

Fabrication of fresh pasta in class !

Thursday, November 17th

Today, when we arrived in Italian, the students were speaking about pasta. We didn't understand with Eva and they told us that they will made pasta with the Italian teacher.
I was thinking that I didn't understand because the lesson began normally and they did presentations. The second presentation was about pasta so I was thinking that it was just a presentation about it but just after, the teacher took a big bag with a pasta machine and a dought which formed a ball. So we really did fresh pasta!

The teacher did little balls of dought and she passed in one side of the machine: this gave a dought very flattened.

Sometimes it were holes in the pasta because I wasn't enough water and the dought was very thin. So we did an other time and it was better (the teacher kneaded it)! After this, we chose to do "tagliatelle" (a famous kind of Italian pasta) so we passed the pasta in the mold for this kind of pasta.

They come really well and after we made little heaps of the pasta.

We made this pasta for eating it tomorrow in the class so we placed it in front of the window for let them dry.

I hope it will be very good !

My afternoon in a rider school

Sunday, November 13th

This week end was a really cool week-end because Saturday (the 12th of November lélé), I went to a rider school. We spoke about it at home because I wanted to try to do horse riding in Austria. We called a lot of clubs and there was room in one of them so we went there Saturday afternoon. When we found the club, I meet the teacher who speak English and she is very kind. She showed me her horses and the horse that I will ride today: it was a beautiful horse! We prepared him and I spoke a lot with the teacher.

After, we began the lesson in a career witch was very funny because on the floor there were pieces of armchairs (like moss)! The lesson was very cool, we did dressage, the horse was very good and it has really good gaits (the teacher told me after that this horse can jump 1m70!!).
I was a bit tense because it was my first time in this club but it was very well so at the end I was very happy!

So, I will be in a course with people of my level and I will begin the next Friday at 16:00h, I'm so exiting!

I thank my host family for allowing me to do that!
